What is Treclin gel?

Treclin gel is a topical treatment prescribed for acne vulgaris. It is applied directly to the affected areas of skin on the face.

The gel contains two active ingredients, Clindamycin and Tretinoin. This combination is effective at reducing spots and treating redness and inflammation.

Treclin gel comes in 30g tubes and is a translucent yellow gel.

How does Treclin work?

Treclin gel works by combining 2 active ingredients, Clindamycin and Tretinoin which combat acne.

Clindamycin (antibiotic)

  1. Kills the bacteria that causes acne which is present on skin
  2. Reduces redness and inflammation

Tretinoin (retinoid)

  1. Regulates the growth and shedding of skin cells
  2. Helps dead skin cells to shed instead of blocking hair follicles
  3. Promotes the normal flow of sebum (your skin's natural oil)

Clindamycin and Tretinoin are effective when used individually, but when combined, their actions help treat acne symptoms such as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, inflammation and redness.

What are the benefits of using Treclin?

Treclin has many benefits apart from treating acne, these include:

  • Once-daily application: Treclin only needs to be applied once daily, which makes it simple for patients to use and incorporate into their routine.
  • Gel-based product: Treclin is a gel, which means that the treatment is quickly absorbed and is less greasy than other acne treatments.
  • Combination of ingredients: Treclin combines two ingredients in a single product, eliminating the need to apply separate products.

How effective is it?

Although treatment outcomes will vary depending on the individual, Treclin has been proven to be very effective at treating acne.

Three 12-week phase 3 clinical trials involving 4550 patients were conducted to evaluate the effects of Treclin. In these studies, patients were randomised to receive treatment with Treclin, monotherapy with Clindamycin or Tretinoin alone, or a plain vehicle (containing no active ingredient).

After 12 weeks of use, the results showed that Treclin reduced acne lesions more effectively than other treatments:

Who can and cannot use it?

Treclin is an effective option for many patients however, it may not be suitable for certain groups of people.

Who can use this medicine?

Treclin is suitable for patients with moderate acne, especially if blackheads, whiteheads, papules and pustules are present. It is often prescribed for patients when over-the-counter treatment has not been enough to treat acne.

Who cannot use this medicine?

Do not use Treclin if you are allergic to the active ingredients or any of the other added ingredients in this medicine.

You should also avoid Treclin if:

  • You are pregnant or planning a pregnancy
  • You are allergic to lincomycin (an antibiotic)
  • You have a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis)
  • You have a history of colitis with past antibiotic use
  • You or a member of your family have ever suffered from skin cancer
  • You have had skin conditions such as acute eczema, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis
  • You have pustular or deep cystic nodular acne (severe acne that causes painful, pus-filled lumps)

Before you use Treclin gel, make sure you’re aware of the following warnings and precautions. This will ensure that you are using the treatment correctly and safely.

  • If you are a fertile woman, you must take extra precautions not to become pregnant by using effective contraceptives during treatment and for 1 month after stopping treatment.
  • Avoid getting the product in or around your eyes, nose, or mouth. Rinse well with water if any contact takes place with these sensitive areas.
  • Avoid using this product on cut or scraped skin.
  • Talk with your doctor about taking this treatment if you have atopic eczema (chronic itching, inflamed skin).

What Treclin dosages are available?

Treclin is available as a gel in which each gram contains 10 mg (1%) of Clindamycin and 0.25mg (0.025%) of Tretinoin.

How and when should I use Treclin?

Always make sure to use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are unsure or confused, ask your doctor.

How to use it

You should apply Treclin as per your doctor’s instructions. Here is a brief guide on how to use Treclin gel:

Image 1

Wash your hands before use.

Image 2

Just like other topical acne treatments, it is important to apply the product to clean, dry skin. Start by washing your face gently and patting it dry with a towel.

Image 3

Squeeze a pea-sized amount of gel from the tube onto your fingertip. Then, dot this around the face.

Image 4

Gently spread the gel thinly and evenly over the entire affected area.

Image 5

Wash your hands and replace the cap on the gel.

For further information, consult the patient information leaflet.

When to use it

The treatment should be applied once per day, preferably before bedtime. Do not shower or bathe after applying the cream as this can stop it from working properly.

How long do I use it for?

Treclin is usually prescribed for a treatment period of up to 12 weeks. After this period, your doctor will assess your progress to decide if you should continue or adjust your treatment.

Avoid using Treclin longer than recommended without consulting your healthcare provider, as this may increase the risk of side effects.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you forget to use Treclin, you should skip the missed dose and apply the next dose at the usual time. Do not double dose to make up for the missed dose.

How long does Treclin take to work?

Most patients will notice an improvement in their acne within a few weeks of treatment with Treclin. Typically, it may take up to 12 weeks to see the full results but this may vary from person to person.

To get the best results, you must use this gel properly and consistently. Do not stop using it as soon as your acne starts to get better.

Contact your doctor if your symptoms continue for more than 12 weeks or worsen, as they will need to re-evaluate your treatment.

What lifestyle changes should I make while using Treclin?

To ensure you get the full benefits of treatment, try incorporating the following lifestyle changes into your routine:

Image 1 Product interactions

Avoid using Treclin at the same time as other creams, gels, or cosmetics, as they may interfere with this medicine and cause reactions or reduce its effectiveness.

Image 2 Skincare

Do not use medicated soaps or exfoliants with a strong drying effect on the skin. Be careful of products containing alcohol, astringents (something used to tighten and decrease the size of your pores), spices, or lime.

Image 3 Diet

Limit your consumption of white bread, sugary drinks, and processed foods as they can contribute to acne. Try eating whole foods and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Some people also find that dairy can worsen their skin. It is also important to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water to remove toxins.

Image 4 Washing your face

Avoid overwashing your face as this can strip your skin of natural oils, leading to increased skin sensitivity and dry skin. Make sure to also pat your skin dry gently after washing your face instead of rubbing your face.

What are Treclin’s side effects?

There is a chance that you might experience some side effects when applying Treclin, although this is uncommon.

When you first start using the gel, you may feel a slight irritation or burning on your face. This usually resolves by itself once your body gets used to the treatment.

Uncommon side effects may affect up to 1 in 100 people and include:
  • Burning, inflammation, dryness, or redness on the application site
  • Increased sebum production (an oily substance produced by the skin)

  • Itchiness
  • Rash
  • Scaly skin

Rare side effects

Some side effects are rare and may only affect up to 1 in 1000 people, these can include:
  • Hypersensitivity
  • An underactive thyroid gland
  • Headache
  • Eye irritation
  • Inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract
  • Nausea
  • Cold sores
  • Skin bleeding
  • Discolouration of the skin

If your side effects are bothering you (or if you have any side effects that aren’t listed in the patient leaflet) we recommend that you speak with a doctor or healthcare professional.

Does Treclin interact with any other medicines?

It is important to tell your doctor about any medication you are currently taking (or have recently taken) as Treclin gel can interact with other treatments. This includes prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines and herbal supplements.

Whilst using Treclin gel, you must also avoid any preparations that contain:
